Converting GeoVision Video for Distribution

GeoVision videos are recorded in the proprietary Geovision video codec. What this means is that they will not be playable by default on another PC. It may play on your PC if you have the codec installed, but generally the public will not be able to view the files.

One way around this is to use a program to convert the video files from the Geovision codec to the Microsoft Mpeg4 codec. This is useful if you need to give the file to the police, your business associates and your attorney after an incident.

Microsoft Confirms Another Zero-Day Vulnerability

On Monday, a set of software components that are shipped in a large variety of Microsoft products have been confirmed to have zero-day vulnerability. The vulnerability rests in Microsoft's Office Web Components, which are used to publish things like databases, charts and spreadsheets on the web. The good news is that Microsoft is currently working on a patch but have yet to comment on when it will be released.

Dave Forstrom, who is a group manager and part of Microsoft's Security Response Center, said in a blog post earlier "Specifically, the vulnerability exists in the Spreadsheet ActiveX control and while we've only seen limited attacks, if exploited successfully, an attacker could gain the same user rights as the local user."

The ActiveX control is just a small add-on program which works in your web browser. It facilitates functions like downloading things like security updates or programs. But it has been seen over the years that the controls have become prone to vulnerabilities. The new flaw in the system happened the day before Microsoft was going to release it's monthly patches which included another patch for zero-day vulnerability. That problem had to do with the Video ActiveX control found within Internet Explorer. Hackers are currently attempting to use this in drive-by download attempts.

Microsoft, who has set patching schedule, has strayed off and issued a patch out of cycle for cases of especially dangerous vulnerabilities. According to Microsoft, the flaw could allow an attacker to execute code remotely on a machine if someone using Internet Explorer goes to a hazardous web site, a hacking technique known as a drive-by download. Some websites, especially ones that have user-provided content or advertisements, could be rigged to take advantage of the vulnerability. "In all cases, however, an attacker would have no way to force users to visit these websites. Instead, an attacker would have to persuade users to visit web site., typically by getting them to click a link in an e-mail message or Instant Messenger message that takes users to the attacker's web site." according to the advisory.

Microsoft has issued a list of affected software. This list includes Office XP Service Pack 3, 2003 Service Pack 3, multiple versions of Internet Security and Acceleration Server and Office Small Business Accounting 2006 as well as others. However, until a patch is ready, Microsoft said one option for their administrators is to disable Office Web Components from running in Internet Explorer which they have even provided instructions on.

Windows 7 RC Now Available Free to Everyone

Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) is official up for download on Microsoft’s Website.

Microsoft says the RC will expire on June 1, 2010, and starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. You'll be given a two-week reminder ahead of time.
The RC that is available on Microsoft’s website is a full featured edition similar to Vista Ultimate. If you are currently running the Windows 7 Beta you will not be able to upgrade to the RC. Instead you will have to do a clean install of the RC.

The Windows 7 RC will be available on Microsoft’s Website for free until August 1, 2009.

To install Windows 7 RC you will need to first download the RC at Microsoft’s website here.

After it has finished downloading you will need to burn it to a disc and then pop it in and your good to go. If you run into any trouble there is guide on the entire process on their website.

Conflickr The Day After

April Fools day has come and gone with out the predicted attack from the Conficker C virus that was set to wreak havoc on computers across the world. But this doesn’t mean that the threat is over, or forgotten. The virus is still out there and could be introduced to the world at any time. So far Conficker has infected anywhere from 12 million to 15million computers since early 2009 which includes everything from Windows 2000 to the Windows 7 Beta and Windows Server 2000 and 2008.

As many as one out of every 25 Internet addresses that transmits potentially dangerous data over the Internet is infected with the Conficker.c worm, IBM's security arm said today. (April-02-09) The worm is so advanced its designed to mature into new versions and can avoid eradication.

Those at the greatest risk are small and medium sized businesses. They should update everything related to their operating system and do everything possible to update their anti-virus and anti-spyware protection. Although the dreaded virus didn’t hit on April Fools Day doesn’t mean we have seen or heard the last of the Conficker.c worm. No one really knows what the full force of this virus might be, and let’s hope we can avoid finding out.
